Cosmetic dentistry means exactly what it sounds like: electing to pursue dental treatments that will enhance the appearance of your smile. This can be done in many different ways; just let the team at Roosevelt Dental Center of Skagit County know you are interested in exploring your options!
Examples of cosmetic dentistry treatments:
- Orthodontics: braces or Invisalign to better align your teeth
- Porcelain Veneers
- Dental Bonding
- Teeth Whitening
Porcelain veneers are thin layers of ceramic that are made by a dental laboratory and bonded onto your teeth. The purpose of veneers is to reshape, resize, reposition, brighten, and enhance your natural smile.
The diagnosis, preparation, and delivery of porcelain veneers is usually a several appointment process. A smile analysis is the first step toward achieving your goals. Oftentimes it is necessary to make a diagnostic model of your teeth in order to develop the proper treatment plan that is specific to your needs. A “mock-up” or preliminary try-in is sometimes also done so you can see how the appearance of your teeth might change with veneers.
After these preliminary steps are complete, your teeth will be prepared for your new veneers. This usually involves numbing of the areas to be treated and drilling on the teeth where indicated. A final impression or mold of your teeth will be made and sent to the laboratory. You will leave our office with a set of temporary veneers.
A few weeks later, your veneers will be back from the laboratory and ready to try in. Your temporary restorations are removed and the veneers will be placed on your teeth. The doctor will evaluate the fit, function, and esthetics of the veneers and determine if the original goals of treatment are being met. Sometimes, it is necessary to send your veneers back to the laboratory to make some minor changes in order to accomplish the desired end result. You and your dentist will make this decision together. Your veneers will then be bonded onto your teeth and you will leave with a brand new smile!
You can care for your new veneers as if they are any other tooth in the mouth. Proper brushing and flossing techniques and regular visits with our hygienists will help you maintain your veneers for a long time to come!
Please note that it is often recommended for those with porcelain veneers to use a custom fit night guard. Bear in mind that veneers are made of ceramic, which is a glass. They can break! A night guard can help to protect against excess forces that may be put on your teeth without you knowing it!
Sometimes spaces, chips, or fractures of teeth can be fixed with bonding. This minimally invasive procedure can be completed in one visit and will change your smile instantly! This involves the use of a composite resin restorative material that is hardened onto your teeth using a blue curing light. Please talk to us if you are interested in esthetic enhancements using dental bonding.
We often hear complaints from patients about a lack of a bright smile. Teeth whitening is frequently an acceptable option for many patients to achieve those pearly whites! Custom fit bleaching trays are quick and easy to fabricate and simple to use – let us know if you’re interested!
Causes of darkening teeth:
- Natural enamel defects
- Food/liquid stain
- Tobacco use
Things to keep in mind: any existing restorations, like crowns or fillings, will not bleach. If you have any prior work on your front teeth, talk to your dentist about what this means for your bleaching results. It is often necessary to “touch-up” your bleaching as the results tend to fade over time.
